HP announced a new product line refresh of its TouchSmart computers today. I’ve been using one for the past six months or so and, if you have to use Windows, it’s not a bad way to go.
But the touch-screen desktop has one peculiar problem.
Since the TouchSmart bills itself as an all-in-one media player—you can plug your TV cable directly into it and watch and DVR TV—I put mine in my bedroom. Typically, when I went to sleep, I’d let it sleep as well (rather than actually powering it down.) But one night, in the middle of the night, the TouchSmart flickered to life by itself and, as I blearily watched, the cursor started slowly moving across the screen. What crap, I thought.
I rousted myself to try and figure out why it was behaving that way. I got close to the screen and peered at the cursor, which moved, then stopped, moved then stopped. Hmmmm, mystery solved: It was a house fly, walking across the screen. Talk about “touch sensitive.”
